How election voting works

In all elections, we use a method known as the Single Transferrable Vote (STV). This basically means that each voter gets the opportunity to rank candidates in the order they wish to see them elected – they will select numbers rather than just put a mark next to a single name.
A winning candidate must receive a certain number of votes (also known as a quota) to be elected, which will change depending on thenumber of votes cast. We believe this method is most suited to students’ unions as it means candidates must have wide support to win.

More information about this method of electing candidates can be found at www.electoral-reform.org.uk/singletransferable-vote/
