Communities Of Practice - Inclusive Practice in Disability

Communities of Practice: Inclusive Practice in disability

Universities have a legal duty to make sure their education is accessible to all, by making reasonable adjustments. However there may be some practise within the institution that becomes inaccessible due to historic or traditional methods. Therefore Liverpool Hope Students Union (LHSU) are setting up a student led Community of Practice, alongside Liverpool Hope University, to discuss some of the challenges facing individuals within higher education in regards to disability.

What is it?

Communities of Practice are groups of active people who share experiences and thoughts on issues. In this case individuals will share their experiences of barriers within education and the group will look at how to tackle these. The group will look at questions such as ‘how can we make higher education more equitable?’ and how all groups can be fairly represented.

How does it work?

Whilst LHSU will facilitate the gathering, it will work based on individual contributions to the group. These contributions will also be reflected on and the group will look at how to remove barriers within higher education. The group will also discuss how to best look after one another within the dialogue so knowledge can be shared and gained.

Why do they work?

As has been hinted at, they work due to people with different social experiences wanting to learn from one another. This Community of Practice will challenge and develop thought whilst also reflecting on educational methods. Individuals being compelled to share is the main reason Communities of Practice work and others who have learnt from the pooled knowledge will be eager to go, research and learn more.

Who can attend?

The group will be student-led however academics are welcome to attend so they can reflect on their own practices. It will be held on 1st November at 1.00 in GWB 219.
